WHAT’S IN A NAME?
What’s in a name? In the case of a blog or website, it is every thing.When I started this blog way back in 2016, I wanted to find just the right name. One that implied adventure and mystery, allowed for local travel items as well, also allowed for different topics and discussions. I looked and searched and it seemed every word that I thought of was already taken. I was getting frustrated. Every word and combination of words that I tried was already taken or for sale as a domain for hundreds of dollars.
Then suddenly, it was right in front of me. My word. TRIPS!
From the Cambridge Online Dictionary –
Trip – a noun, a journey in which you go somewhere, usually for a short time, and come back again. Synonyms – adventure, break-journey, circumnavigate, drive, excursion, expedition, jaunt, odyssey. Slang use – a person or experience that is strange or entertaining and exciting.
That was my word – TRIP(S).
A word that means adventure and journey whether it is short or long. Any experience that you see, feel or excites you, is a trip. There are many kinds of trips that you can take – overseas or just down the street. It could be a conversation, a movie, a painting, a theatre play, or book. Something that makes you leave yourself, and your everyday life to experience something new and interesting and different. That is what the words TRIPS means to me. I hope you agree!

About the Author
James Carey is an award-winning filmmaker and theatre director, author, performer, world traveler and producer with both national and international credits in all these categories who is currently based in Atlanta, GA. He lived in Los Angeles for 40 years where he taught theatre and film studies at several Southern California universities and served as the Producing Artistic Director of the ATTIC THEATRE ENSEMBLE in Los Angeles from 1987 to 2016, and the Artistic Director of SkyPilot Theatre Company from 2017 to 2021.
As a director and producer, he has overseen the production of over 400 plays and short films covering a wide range of genres including musicals, Shakespeare, and new works. His productions have won numerous awards. Favorite productions include the World Premiere of Sam Shepard’s Suicide in B Flat, World Premiere of four unknown Thornton Wilder one acts, the West Coast Premiere of Frogs by Stephen Sondheim, the LA small theatre debut of Love, Valor, Compassion and the West Coast Premiere of Theresa Rebeck’s Family of Mann.
He is known as a filmmaker for the award winning films Love Potion (2023) Divorce During Pandemic (2020) which won numerous awards and was an Official Selection for 13 film festivals around the world., Fancy Meeting You Here (2018) was selected Best Independent Short at the INDEPENDENT FILMMAKERS SHOWCASE in Los Angeles for 2019 and A Cost of Freedom (2008) was a Finalist at the Ethos Film Awards in Los Angeles while also winning Best International Short Film at Ellora Film Festival and Best Dramatic Short at Reale Film Festival in Milan. His two features – Madly (2021-Co-Director) & Alternative Endings (2022-Co-Director) won Film Festival Laurels all over the world.
In 2012, he formed CAREY ON CREATIVE, LLC/ATTIC STUDIOS to focus personal creative projects which have included this blog, traveling, and international directing and teaching. He has worked in Zimbabwe, Malawi, South Africa, Italy and the UAE. In 2013, his one man show, COMING TO ZIMBABWE debuted at the Harare International Festival of Arts and toured southern Africa. His musical revue, COME TOGETHER has toured both North America and Africa. His second award winning one man show MI CASA SU CASA debuted in 2018 touring the fringe festival circuit in the USA.
Since arriving in ATL he has been very busy acting in films and TV(COLOR PURPLE THE MUSICAL, DIVISION, COLLATERAL INTEREST and more), directing film and theatre (4000 MILES and DOUBT for the Authenticity Theatre).
